I'm PRETTY sure that's a human-hand inside a spacesuit glove, and NOT the Space Jockey.

I've often liked to imagine it was to scan the future so that he could see where the best places to leave eggs there for thousands of years. There might be other things.

Yeah its a hand in a glove all right, was confimed by FOX a few months ago, more or less stating no one had seen anything of the Space Jockey yet...pretty much says it all.
