You don't even really need to analyse it.  It amazing how a single shot of a sunset can convey time passing.

Wait, I'm confused. Is the discussion about A3 or AR? Because in A3 the sunset does convey time, but in AR not so much.

SM:
I woulda said the other way round.

The sunset in Alien3 is at the end of a fairly longish pseudo montage.  Most of the time appears to have passed during this (computer displays over images of the crash and bodies, then the EEV being hoisted inside).  The sunset is like a coda that says "And if that wasn't bad enough - now it's getting dark".

ALIEN the nightmare begins or instead of the whole thing being the title you could just call it ALIEN and then have the rest as a gimic like ALIEN - birth of the monster. :o
