New adaptation. A remake implies they're retelling the 90s movie, which they aren't.

Exactly. A remake is when you make the same film again and the majority of the film plays out like the original or preevious film. A new adaptation doesnt look to the previous film for inspiration, but it looks to the actual source material which in this case is the Philip K Dick story. If the original source material was a film then yes it would be a remake. Its a fine line granted. Would Baz Lurhmans Romeo & Juliet be classed as a remake of any previous film versions? No, its an adaptation of the original story.

If it's not a remake then I don't know why they call the title the same as the original?

Because it's a better film title than We Can Remember it for You Wholesale.

Why not add a sub title then? This movie has the same issue that the upcoming Thing prequel has, they want you think that it's a remake when it's not.

I actually The Thing prequel using the exact same name as the original is really strange as you like you said, alot of people will think its a remake. Maybe by the time its released they'll change the title a bit. We'll see.

Kate Beckinsale has been offered the role of Lori.

Her husband is directing, so she might very well end up in the movie.

Do we realy need a fourth movie? Why not just take the idea and do a different movie? Paycheck, Minority Report, and now they finally decided to just go through with it. Well, score is 2/3 so, I am looking forward to it, if not only because of Bryan Cranston.

A fourth "Total Recall". Those other films were all originally intended to be remakes or sequels.

Wether they were originally intended to be or not is irrelevant. The fact is they arent and theyre not based on the same story Total Recall was therefore this is the second adaption of We Can Remember It For You Wholesale. Minorty Report was based on the short story of the same name, as was Paycheck respectively. They have nothing whatsoever to do with Total Recall other than an idea once floated around that they could tie them in and use those stories to make a sequel. Not that daft an idea considering theyre all Philip K Dick. They didnt do that clearly.

I still want to check out A Scanner Darkly. I hear its pretty damn good but ive never seen it.

It was relevant to what I was saying... After two decades of making other, sometimes better, movies based of a "Total Recall" script, we're finally getting a remake (like it or not, it is a remake because they're keeping details and plot points only found in the Verhoeven film, the "True Grit" argument won't work here). Paul Verhoeven even mentioned it in his commentary talking about "Minority Report", and likewise in the special features for "Minority Report" and "Paycheck". I think it's interesting to note the similarities between the movies now knowing what the were originally intended to be, however they may have changed when we got the final product. The fact is, "Total Recall" was based of the novelette, and these other films were inspired by the loose-fiilm adaptation and intended as remakes or sequels.

And I should note I got all of this information from the film makers in the special features for each movie's DVD, all referencing eachother, and only "Total Recall" referencing the novelette. Sure, it was mentioned in a 'Total Recall, which was based on the PKD story, is what inspire our...' sort of a way, but they all cited "Total Recall" as the original basis for their movie.

Minority Report is based on the short story called "The Minorty Report" and Paycheck was based on the short story called "Paycheck". Simple as that. Wether they ever intended or had plans to then make these stories become a part of Total Recall is irrelevant because they didnt. Minorty Report wasnt based off Total Recall. Sure the original pitch was to make a sequel to Total Recall and use the story from Minority Report as a basis, but thats not what happened. Theyre not adaptations of Total Recall, theyre adaptations of the short stories they share their names with.

I still find it interesting, though, that you can note certain similarities from Recall that stuck with the other scripts (as pointed out on the DVDs) and that "Total Recall" has been the original basis for as many films... :P

Also, just because they're named after the other short stories, doesn't mean that they aren't also based off of others, as well. That may be a ridiculous argument, but many of the PKD adaptaions are so loose, sometimes the only thing kept from the original is the name.
