Electric Peace by The Cult
For those who don't know the background behind this, in 1986 The Cult went in to the studio to record their third album, to be titled
Peace. They album was recorded, mixed and mastered, but then the band decided they didn't like the sound, so the whole thing was scrapped and they started over with a new producer. They re-recorded some of the songs and replaced the rest with new tracks, and the result was 1987's
Electric. Fast forward to a few years ago, and the band re-released
both albums in this 2CD set, with the original unreleased record on the bonus disc.
Truth be told, I actually prefer the original album that the band shelved. I find
Electric to be a bit bland, whereas the original is a lot more interesting and sounds more like classic 80s rock. Directly comparing the re-recorded songs, just about every one of them sounds far more exciting in its original version; "Peace Dog" in particular does nothing for me on
Electric, but the original
Peace sessions version is amazing. It doesn't help that the cover of Steppenwolf's "Born to Be Wild" the band put on
Electric is really kinda terrible.
At least now that both versions are so easy to get I can listen the the superior original
