Title: Weyland Industries website updated w/ Corporate Timeline!

I wouldn't mind having my own David 7. :P

Some easter egg teases for fans in there: Colonial marines! Power loaders! Prison colonies! The Yutani Corporation!
Okay, it's pretty cool. My fan receptors are currently all a-twinge. I'm now almost sold on you, Lindelof :P

The shareholders would have probably gotten a better return on investment if they started terra-forming Gilese 581g, instead of 581c

The amount of stuff they've created. They've had to stolen that Jockey tech.

Establishment of HD 85512 b

Weyland Industries awarded government contract to build and maintain HD 85512 b Class E Correctional Unit. Prisoners from Earth and other facilities are successfully relocated, and many have since been rehabilitated into society.

this relates to Fiorina

Would they happen to have a model based on either Kate Beckinsdale, Salma Hayek, Charlize Theron, Catherine Zeta-Jones, or Ashley judd...or perhaps vintage versions of Ingrid Bergmen, Natalie Wood, Grace Kelly, or Jane Seymour??

I'll buy that for a dollar!!  (note:  movie reference)

2029- WEYLAND WINS PATENT SUIT

After years of litigation, Weyland wins the David patent lawsuit against the Japanese start-up Yutani Corporation, effectively protecting the investments of both Weyland Industries and its shareholders.

No way is this in ALIEN prequel! Nope! No way, no how! ::)

I realize this is a fictional, hypothetical...ALTERNATIVE time-line...but

QuoteWeyland Industries introduces the first FTL-capable SEV (space exploration vehicle).

January 17, 2034

That is approximately the time when we "HOPE" to have a sustained, manned presence on the Moon...and before there is even any optimisitc estimates of a manned landing on Mars.  Sometimes, REALITY SUCKS !!!

I know this would have thrown off the canononical "time-frame", but they should have pushed everything 100+ years into the future, starting with the first "Weyland" innovation/discovery/invention.

WEYLAND REVIVES JIMO
Using capital from his 2015 success, Weyland acquires copyrights to technology developed by NASA's innovative but poorly funded Project Prometheus. With Weyland's significantly augmented funding for the project, JIMO became a reality and proves the existence of simple life in Europa's ocean.

I wonder do they go looking for life in this.

Yeah, I hear you. But what can you do? I'd rather wish they hadn't turned Weyland into this super-genius/bordering on comic book-character guy, but hopefully that won't be emphasized too much in the film. This is clearly going to be more ALIENS than ALIEN in tone. But that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Not to be a "wet-blanket"...but Project Prometheus was a successor to the old NASA NERVA nuclear propulsion research.  Instead of using the NERVA model of nuclear thermal propulsion (which had some impressive ISPs), it was based on nuclear electric propulsion.  Basically, it was a high power density nuclear reactor generating electricity to power ion or mangeto-plasma propulsion...which has very poor specific impulse.  In EITHER case...neither method would have gotten to even a fraction of light speed.  The fastest "practical" method devised, utilizing "available" technology and theory, is Project Orion...which would maybe attain velocities of 0.10c (10% light speed).  Incidentally, this was formulated back in the late 1950s / early 1960s

Weyland builds and successfully deploys thousands of Seventh Generation Davids into workplaces across the universe. Human acceptance of David 7 reaches an all-time high thanks to Weyland's highly classified emotional encoding technology, David 7 can accurately replicate most human emotions down to the tiniest nuance while consistently achieving all mission objectives.

What I'd like to know is, if the David android was so widespread and successful, where does the Ash model fit into all this and how come it went so wrong?

I mentioned "Project Orion".

"Project Daedelus" doesn't count, because it is based on controlled, SUSTAINED fusion reaction, which we haven't even reached in our best, most sophisticated laboratories.  So, it is as Sci-Fi (at this point) as matter-antimatter propulsion.

The problem, as I have already mentioned, is that "Prometheus" and "Alien" now have to take place in some "alternative" reality.  I mean, look at Kubrick's 2001:  A Space Odyssey.  Basically, the Weyand time-line is setting us up for the same decoherence between reality and fantasy.  If they simply pushed everything back another hundred or more years, then we could still "dream" of the possibility.  The way it stands now...it isn't going to happen in our "universe".

Still, it's an idea nonetheless.

I think the key thing to keep in mind with science fiction is often the idea of an unprecedented revolution creating a game-changing scenario is often the backbone for getting us out there. Something BIG happens to shift the paradigm back to making space travel more economical. Just because we're not there yet in this reality doesn't mean we can't dream, and to a degree I think that's one of the most important functions of the Science Fiction Genre. To dream big and hopefully inspire the smartest among us to turn dreams into realities.

Ah, the heck with it.  They could still keep all the same "events", but move the time-line.  I mean, they are already making up the shit, anyways...so would "fans" really complain if the events in "A L I E N" and ALIENS took place a hundred years further into the future then what the original films stated.

EDIT:  On second thought, I am certain they would find a reason to complain.

If they pushed it another 100 years it might still work, but this timeline is simply too all over the place for me, while all the films pretty much have set dates. I rather get the impression not only might Prometheus be in some alternate universe, but it seems to be heading away from Alien altogether, while some evidence to the contrary in this timeline, may simply be a polite nod to the films but nothing more.  ???

I find some of this stuff a little hard to swallow. It does seem we're going on an alternate timeline from Weyland inventing a synthethic trachea when he was 14, I'm not sure that was even a legal use of stem-cell research then, of course I'd like to be proved wrong.

At 25 he invents a use of solar panels to make a continual summer solstice and collect continual solar energy - wouldn't that have adverse side-effects on the weather? He probably needed to get that polar ice-cap atmos up there to cancel out the shiz he pulled with the solar panels!  ::)

He then goes on to Cure Cancer before the TED Talk even happens...  :o

Its like theyre making this guy a superhero but we all know what happens to his Company after he's gone, or is it really going to be that Yutani corrupts the once beneificial MegaCorp.

Also where was the Holo-Environ-Simulator in the ALIEN films, you mean that park environ Ripley sat in at Gateway Station? Wasn't really a Holo Environment was it? And that was 150 years or so after this was invented!  ;D

I wouldn't mind an ATV NR6 though, it can go vertically!  :) We're bound to see it in the film and the Dialectic Implant means we may see some Yutani people about, as there is no gap between English and Japanese conversations now.

The Synapse Reestablisher may get some screentime too.

I enjoy the scientific knowledge you bring to the table, but i also have no qualms with the timeline presented here. I've already accepted that it takes place in a world other than our own, as so many science fiction films do. I don't know that anyone would go in with the mindset that this all may one day be a reality. I mean, i suppose it could be, but that'd be highly unlikely.

I doubt it's worth getting too worked up over some of the sillier aspects of this--just remember, this isn't the movie, this a viral marketing website designed to be a fun thing for fans. Most of this stuff, aside from obviously glaring plot points, probably isn't even going to be referenced in the film.

Also it says the Lifeboat can sustain someone for 50 years, perhaps the link to ALIEN is part of the film is set after ALIEN when someone scavenges a Lifeboat with one of the crew in it??  :o

Maybe all references to the Nostromo and the alien collection is wiped due to the warning this crew member gives to the Company. Cue ALIENS a few more decades after...

Cure for the Common Cancer

Scientists from the Health Division identify the genetic chain of events for 98% of cancers. Using genetically-altered cells as well as elements found beyond Earth's heavens, Weyland successfully deploys an effective cure for almost all cancers.
June 1, 2022

This part also bothers me in relation to ALIENS, where we learn from Burke not all cancers have been cured, that Ripley's daughter indeed died of cancer a few years prior in (pressumably) 2177, yet Weyland Industries was able to cure most cancers by 2022, over 150 years before the fact!!  This just doesn't seem right at all.

Are these the red light emitting orbs we have seen?

No, those would be these, I guess:

Scientists from the Health Division identify the genetic chain of events for 98% of cancers. Using genetically-altered cells as well as elements found beyond Earth's heavens, Weyland successfully deploys an effective cure for almost all cancers.

The apparent perfection of atmospheric processing/terraforming so early in picture is a problem of the same nature. If it existed well before the events of Alien, why would Burke go out of his way to explain what they were and how it worked in Aliens, let alone the fact that Weyland Yutani "manufacture those, by the way".

Well, those are more problems for Prometheus than they are for Aliens. I don't imagine too much will be referenced in the film anyway. There was a mistake in Aliens that annoyed me but is probably only known to hardcore fans, and that is that the US has, just before the timeline of Alien, become the United Americas, uniting with South America, and has become a supercontinent of sorts. A new flag was designed for it in Alien, but in Aliens the Marines wear the ole stars n' stripes. Almost no one else will really catch this, it wasn't detailed in Alien at all, but only in the lore (Cobb's designs, Ridley's timeline etc).

We'll just have to resolve Burke's speech with Prometheus by figuring that he's narrating the obvious because he thinks Ripley's a little ignorant; being essentially a tug's warrant officer. You can go on trips today and have people point out the seemingly obvious and established. As for the cancer deal, diseases come and go. It may have re-reared its head in the 22nd century, or treatment cost more money than Amanda Ripley could afford, hence Burke's brushing off.

Skimming over this timeline, I never would have expected Atmospheric processors to be patented and utilized so early (I felt like Burke explaining them to Ripley was a sort of clue that they were fairly recent).  And I guess we can be expecting a couple of David androids coming our way.  No big deal anyway, I guess it takes some getting used to.  :)

There's some here who have a certain amount of disbelief regarding the progress that Weyland make in a few dozen years. I think, even more now, that Weyland is the 'Prometheus' analogy, the little tidbits of info such as his mother being a professor of comparitive mythology and the seemingly trivial mention in the timeline;

Weyland Industries opens several new offices across the globe expanding corporate presence to Greece, Antarctica, El Salvador, and South Africa to name a few.

July 21, 2035

Indicate to me that Weyland gains his knowledge from clues left behind by Alien visitors (the saucer people). After finding the first piece (maybe with his mother on a field trip to an ancient Indian Temple) he tracks down further artifacts around the globe and passes that information on it his research teams. I'm not assuming that he finds huge stone slabs with carvings but perhaps something that is hidden in some weird inter-dimensional safe deposit box, he finds out how to access the first one by mistake and then it snowballs from there.

Just a theory...

Worth noting: although the website says Peter Weyland founded "Weyland Industries" in 2023, the timeline makes a reference to a Weyland company existing at least as early as 2015, so maybe everyone's "WOOHOO THIS RETCONNED AVP OUT OF EXISTENCE!!!" jubilation might have been a bit premature? ;)

Or am I going to start seeing mental gymnastics in order to account for it, the same thing the AvP-haters were ridiculing the AvP-fans for doing in order to find ways to include 'AvP'? ;)

Because the timeline is about Peter Weyland and the corporation's achievements under his direction. The timeline also doesn't say when he founded the company at all.

Fun fact: I'm pretty sure 'AvP' takes place on or around Oct 1st, 2004. That happens to be a date mentioned on the timeline, even if it doesn't reference the events of 'AvP'.

It's looking more and more like the website isn't contradicting 'AvP' as much as some people might want to believe, even if it doesn't directly reference it, either. It's a smart thing to do - it allows people who dislike 'AvP' to disregard it, but still allows the people who like it to include it. :)

No, the timeline states that Weyland have been building better worlds for 50 years, in reference to Peter outlining the course of the company in terms of terraforming during the 2023 TED talk. From that point on, Weyland Industries became the space-jaunting company. They existed before that but in a purely earth-bound capacity: Sir Peter Weyland clarifies his vision for Weyland Industries, laying the groundwork for the next 50 years of Building Better Worlds. I thought it was all pretty clear.

After the film has been released I'd love this website to be updated to include events occuring throughout the whole Alien saga - to give a good breakdown on all of Weyland, including its merge with Yutani.

Too bad, I was hoping he would have better taste in films.

I always liked to think predators and aliens exist in the same universe (though I hated the two avp movies)

Didnt the idea of weyland and yutani being two separate companies was first introduced in Paul Anderson's avp movie?

yes, but the aplication of that technology is probably what takes longer to create.

Weyland scientists discover the inverse relationship between velocity and the flow of time making the long sought-after concept of faster than light travel a reality. The search for practical application begins.

Weyland Industries introduces the first FTL-capable SEV (space exploration vehicle).

January 17, 2034

the Prometheus has artificial gravity and can actually land by itself, it's a planetary exploration vehicle besides a space exploration one. the FTL travel is only the beggining.

Aliens is arguably the best hollywood sequel along with terminator 2.

Just because you hate it, doesnt make it a bad film

Yes.

And yeah while I totally understand people disliking 'Aliens' and it's a perfectly valid opinion to have, the vast majority of audiences really liked it for numerous reasons. Hell, Giger liked the Queen design a lot and said that he wished he'd come up with it.

A friend of mine who hasn't seen any of the Alien films recently watched the trailer for Prometheus and said his mid was blown. Upon asking me if this is the beginning of a franchise, I told him about Alien being the follow-up story, and gave him a lowdown on the story and shown him a picture of the Alien itself. He isn't a huge fan of films, and though he'd heard of Alien he knew ABSOLUTELY nothing about it - and believed that Alien was in fact going to be the next released film in a couple of years following Prometheus and was blown away even more by the fact that the mythology and universe created would be, for him, the next huge franchise to wait for and anticipate.

I feel a bit sorry for him due to his stupidity in not realizing at first that the the Alien film I told him about was that Alien film and franchise that he'd heard about but nothing about. I also feel a bit cruel in leading him on that way, haha.

However, it got me thinking...

Ridley has mentioned that there will be a Prometheus sequel - and I'm not suggesting that he would ever remake Alien himself, nor would anybody even attempt to remake it - but, what if a sequel to Prometheus occurs during or following the events of Alien - there are so many stories that could be told following the events of the Nostromo, that could lead into the other films. One that struck me, for example was Weyland-Yutani's terraforming of LV-426. They must have come across the Derelict ship. I mean, how the hell do you miss it? But, I would love to maybe see some of the process of the terraforming, and maybe even what happened when the Mom & Pop Survey team returned to Hadley's Hope with the Facehugger attached to the man's face, and the events that transpired there, whilst Ripley was nice and safe orbiting Earth.

It's just some random thoughts - not suggesting anything here, but I think there are so many great stories that could be told now, I'd be surprised if nobody actually attempted something along those lines. Personally, I'd like Ridley to go "original" again with the sequel, tell a unique and different story, but again tie it into the previous films - but maybe, a little bit more than Prometheus is.

wrong quote, but now that you ask, the people that dislike Aliens usually have a grudge against Cameron in specific. they didn't like how the cast was pretty stereotypical(not unlike it was in alien), they disliked the way the movie used war themes(like alien was a glorified slasher), and they claim the movie dumbed down the aliens, despite them showing far more brilliance than than the first alien. most of the elements they complain in Aliens were present in Alien, but it's easier to turn a blind eye at them.

in resume, it's a mix of pretentiousness and extreme idealization of Alien as the perfect movie that had no flaws that warps their perception.

Yes me too except wasnt happy with Alien3 but i believe the predator (not the super predator crap) and the aliens exists in one world and the AVP movies were crap but i still believe there could be something good out of this.
Wouldnt mind if Ridley and Lindelof put them in a Prometheus film.
Because after all they arent the hunters anymore.

The cancer thing could just mean that the theatrical version of Aliens is canon and not the director's cut.  I honestly don't really think Ripley has a daughter, because I ignore the inferior director's cut.  I also don't think it's clear in the theatrical cut that Newt's parents discover the derelict.  Some of this stuff was jettisoned for good reasons I think, because it was slightly corny.

I have to admit as a child I loved "Aliens".  It is just a movie I feel like I have outgrown.  I don't really do action movies anymore.  Not my cup of tea.

I dislike James Cameron's use of mother/child relationship in a lot of his scifi.  I find it cheese on toast and leads to some of the corniest dialog in movie history.  It's not an "Aliens" example because, honestly, I haven't seen that movie in 15 years.  Sarah Connor's speech in Terminator 2 about giving birth is up there in my mind with some of the lowest points in dialog history.  No one speaks like that.  And I remember more then a few moments like that between Ripley and Newt.

I love the 4 days life span of the alien and think it makes the most sense given their growth rate.  Mature quickly and have a very short life span.  I like the pure instinct/lack of intelligence alien[it was simply looking for a way to reproduce].  I like the lack of queen and structure.  I love the morphing the crew into more eggs to continue the cycle.  I am not a fan of the Queen/warrior/worker thing.  It's probably the fan of "metal hurlant" in me because flaws and all that is how the original felt.  Like a really good '70's comic book.  Then again, that is what you get when you add Moebius and Giger to a '70's scifi movie.

Plus there is his lack of respect for the intellectual work of others, but that is neither here nor there because the original Terminator is still a great movie, and better then most of the stuff he "ripped off".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwyyJ3D3g1E# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwyyJ3D3g1E#)

In the end it is mostly different strokes.  A lot of the charm i found in the original Alien didn't translate to Aliens.  Again, be it a different director, different decade, different goals in what you want to accomplish artistically in a movie.  And I will be the first to admit that the charm I found in the original Alien is something a lot of people would hate.

Because according to Ellison himself: "'Terminator' was not stolen from 'Demon with a Glass Hand" - he pinned it entirely on Solider (that is, both stories feature a time traveller from a war-torn future arriving in the contemporary day - and that's it. If that constitutes a ripping off then Alien really is creatively bankrupt; save for the ideas nicked from 50's B-movies and literature). Several stories and movies. Not from Heavy Metal though; that was fairly recent (est. '75 in France as Metal Hurlant - '77 as Heavy Metal in the US). O'Bannon was influenced by older pulp 'zines.

That and Scott always, ALWAYS admits that what he did was nothing particularly new in theme but absolutely was in style, pacing and aesthetics. 'It's the old house story' told in a different way. Now even talking about Chainsaw Massacre and the Exorcist as true originals.  Oh and Thelma and Louise...

Also I openly state that one of the reason I like it so much IS BECAUSE it feels like a good heavy metal/metal hurlant strip.  And that "Aliens" has none of that feel to it.

Ridley was the person who said he was really influenced my Moebius and Metal Hurlant, not Dan O'bannon.

I'm pretty sure O'Bannon introduced him to the magazine like he did Giger.  The guy wrote segments for Heavy Metal the film as well.  So this is a pretty moot point I think.  Although, I guess I was wrong about the story with the alien creature terrorizing a spaceship crew coming from Heavy Metal specifically.  But he did say it was from something he read.  Thus criticizing Cameron for using influences from stuff he read is a bit ridiculous.

Aliens may have been less like Heavy Metal maybe, but it was also extremely cutting edge, revolutionary scifi in its own right.  I still watch that movie and it's pretty much brand new to me.  It was a scifi game changer almost on the same level of the original in terms of influence.  I don't think it had to be like Alien either, and that's why it succeeds.  The best sequels are typically ones that do not replicate the original.

I know you're in my corner but I'm a stickler for pointing out that Ridley was already steeped into Heavy Metal long before Alien (he was wanting to make Tristan and Isolde as a Heavy Metal styled movie prior to Alien). O'Bannon's H.M. story, The Long Tomorrow, which Moebius inked, directly influenced much of Blade Runner, though. Scott referred to Alien as a simple film ("like rock n' roll") and B.R. as a Heavy Metal live-action strip  :)

Plus, looking at it, theres only money to be made in the treatment, not the cure. I think its likely Weyland created a serum to hold the progress of the cancer and a sufferer would need repeat shots or it'll spread again.

I am also concerned about the potential energy crisis Weyland would make in 2015 by using solar panels to create infinitely renewable solar energy. That would make companies go bust very quickly and with Weyland already holding a monopoly on the world's energy supply as everyone turns to Weyland Solar power, lots of people will be without jobs and this will spread to the use of technology reliant on fossil fuels etc, like automobiles.

Of course if Weyland employed the thousands of millions worldwide that lose their jobs from this, he will need the further funding from other companies to keep everyone paid. Already by the late 2010s he would have a MegaCorp.

Good point.

I personally feel Ripley's daughter did't die from cancer, but rather some brutal interrogation from the company.

Not true, Aliens feels (and Looks) like a comic too if not more so, it defined the entire (dark horse) comic series.  If anything Alien is more of a heavy metal short story, and Aliens an (adult) graphic novel.  That (used to be) James Cameron's style as the Terminator was exactly the same thing (and translated so well to comic adaptations as a result).  The fact that it looks and feels so comic book has always been the primary reason I love it so much.

I still think the cancer thing is a moot point since the director's cut already seems a bit uncanonical imo.  If they only choose to go with the theatrical cut, I think most people would be fine with that.  Similarly, I would expect them to make a choice between the dog and ox in Alien 3.

James Cameron said the Special Edition is his intended cut, not the theatrical. In some places you can't even buy the Aliens TC  (before the DVD/BD multi-sets). The cancer thing isn't much of an issue, I wrote on my blog - There seems to be a discrepancy here leading up to Aliens, as Ripley's daughter Amanda dies of cancer - "still haven't licked that one," mutters Burke. However, the timeline explains that most cancers were rendered treatable, but not all. Additionally, cancer may have found a way to profligate despite the treatments at hand. It isn't hard to imagine that by the timeframe of Aliens, and certainly by the timeframe of Alien, that cancer cures have become an expensive commodity in the neo-industrialised world, being available only to the higher echelons of society. Lastly, we should consider the dubious source of the timeline - Weyland Industries itself. Don't expect the Company to allow any cracks to appear in its prestigious and pristine image

Heh, only problem is fox owns the site, and I don't think they'd be particularly impressed if the site was exploited by someone.

I'm actually surprised that not much manpower/brainpower has been thrown at guessing the password yet, unless it's happening on another board?

And Ridley's explanation was three is a good number  :P Alien tends to get a free pass compared to the other films' lack of scientific 'integrity'.

Well no, the Nostromo explodes once, and the refinery presumably in two stages. Insofar as the suspension of disbelief goes in Alien, that's the least of many possible examples.

'Alien' is chock-full of scientifically-implausible stuff, anyone who thinks it was trying to be "hard sci-fi" is kidding themselves. The characters are relatable people, the sets look appropriately lived-in and "real", but it's still not "hard sci-fi".

Very few movies are hard sci-fi -- most of them make concessions on some level for artistic/storytelling reasons, and rightly so.

The first explosion was kind of blindingly huge, I doubt the refinery even survived that first blast, let alone the second one. :P

So 'Storm Rifles' are around a century before 'Pulse Rifles'. Atmosphere Processors look identical to the ones in Aliens despite being a century earlier...and looks like all the credit goes to Weyland.
Spoiler
Was the whole purpose of Yutani merging just to add a bit of Asian diversity to the company?  :P

Let us solve the cube test!!

Cube Test!!! (http://www.weylandindustries.com/careers/)

There are only 980,000+ sequences to solve!

Actually - I guess you have to log onto their main page and scroll to careers to gain access.

Anyone know the actual point of this? And is this even possible to do without creating some sort of computer program to do it for you automatically?
