It's common practice for studios to hold private test screenings in SoCal months before release date. I've been to a few. They are thoroughly depressing experiences.

It says the rating is G too for general audiences, obviously the effects haven't been finished i'm guessing, there again it won't have been rated by the mpaa yet or the bbfc in the uk. some movie distributors send rough copies to the rating boards for advice on how to achieve the rating they desire in case something needs to be scaled back or edited from a different angle, they do it with james bond, fast and furious franchise, expendables 2 as it's going to be pg 13, and i wouldn't be surprised if prometheus is going through the process too. This also means Scott has probably shown a rough cut to Tom Rothman and his buddies at Fox, the next few months will be very interesting, i'm only going to be concerned if fox order some reshoots, then we know we could be in for something of a mixed bag.

These things are unfortunately always the same. They go like this:
1. You wait outside the theater in a line while the attendants keep telling you "Oh, they're just cleaning up, it'll just be five more minutes." A half an hour later...

2. You finally get inside. Attendants walk around passing out little bundles of paper and baby pencils. You fill out a Non-disclosure agreement in most cases.

3. Some studio shill walks out, all smiles, and briefly introduces himself and the film.

4. The film starts, usually a rough cut with a temporary score and unfinished visual effects.

5. When the lights go up, you fill out a questionnaire that includes questions along the lines of "Did you think the movie moved too slowly?" or "Were you confused by anything in the movie? Please explain."

6. Everyone leaves after turning in their questionnaires, unless a focus group is being held, in which case a certain number of the audience stays behind to talk about the film. Here's where it gets really depressing. Say the film is a really good, dark, sci-fi film that is clearly aiming to be more than just some shlocky b-picture (like, say, the original cut of 2007's The Invasion). The studio shill will ask the audience "What did you think of this or that?" and the some mouthbreather will raise his or her hand and say "I didn't like it, I thought it was really confusing and stupid, and it went on too long" or "It wasn't exciting enough, parts of it were boring." The inverse happens if the film is some crappy comedy or action picture: everyone in the audience will love it and say "I could, like, see there being like a whole series with this!" And then there is usually one member of the audience who raises their hand and completely contradicts everyone else (usually me, alas) and gets funny looks and pretty much ignored by the studio shill. They tape all this and then take it back to the studio.

It sucks.

What I don't like about this is the idea that the film will be reported on by attendants and more then likely spoiled 3 full months before the film releases. Ugh.

Wish I could go, but I'm in New York...

Makes sense they'd have a screening, though. It's a big studio picture; you have to make sure audiences are okay with it. If they hate it, the studio has a chance to make it better. Or, as in the cases of I Am Legend and Little Shop of Horrors, worse.

I guess I'm in the minority with Little Shop of Horrors. I'm all for dark endings, but I liked the characters in LSOH so much that I likely would have been put off by the original ending myself.

QuoteWhat happened?
It went from resembling David Fincher's assembly cut to what we go in theaters in 1992. The horror.

Post by: Spidey3121 on Jan 19, 2012, 09:51:09 PM
Ridley Scott carries more weight than David Fincher circa 1992. I doubt FOX will release anything he doesn't approve of after going to the trouble of recruiting him for the project.

Eh. Personally I prefer it. And man, they sank 5 million dollars in that rejected ending!

I'm guessing if they change anything about Prometheus... it will be the ending.
Title: Re: SCREENING OF PROMETHEUS!!!!
Post by: Alienseseses on Jan 19, 2012, 10:13:56 PM
I doubt this will lead to many changes if it's good. The most that is likely to happen is a few exposition scenes will be added, a la The Thing 2011.
Also, when the screening happens, I wonder how much of it will be unfinished VFX. If it's mostly practical, it shouldn't be too obvious.

Plays out much as I thought then.  :'( When did all this start? Obviously before Blade Runner. Is that why films that predate 1980 are generally more intelligent?

to anyone who goes, try not to let the excitement get to you.

if you're going there, it's your duty. you are representing all of us, and it's up to you to make sure the movie is at it's best. when you watch the movie and your reaction is "that sucked ass" or "that was amazing", the only thing you should be thinking is "how can it be better? what should be done to improve it?" there's no "good enough".

I just hope that the good folk here at AVPG thoroughly use the spoiler codes throughout the news feed if there are any reports from the screening.

As much as I hate to admit it, the studio fat cats are ultimately interested in turning a profit and they do that by appealing to the masses, not the core group of fans. I don't like the sound of this  :(

Let us not forget what happened to ALIEN 3 after its first test screening... :-\

I think what people maybe should be concerned about here are the 'possible' implications of a test screening, especially if it happens in front of a lame (or should I say uneducated) film audience.  Looked what happened to The Thing Prequel, that test audience complained about the practical effects not being good enough, the studio buys it and ends up ruining the movie with too much CGI, when there was nothing wrong in the effects department to start with.  Ok so that was Universal you might say, but could this audience do the same damage to Prometheus, by bringing about a whole manor of unnecessary changes....you just never know?

If this is a Private Screening and just a mistake, I'm cool with the whole thing...

If it's a Public Test Screening...(shudders)...you just have to look at all those blue-collar gits demanding refunds after paying for 'The Artist', not realising it's a black and white, silent film and not filmed in wide-screen.

If Joe Six-pack dumbs this film down for me, I'm gonna go postal... >:( >:( >:(

Yeah, I expect some serious love from the people around here.

After the screening is over, you'll have to write me 5 page paragraph filled with spoilers, cause I want to know them all! ;)

So a screening is definately happening and going ahead? I hope fox get their asses into gear and start doing some really big advertising for this film, they seem very coy about it at present, we don't even know if it's a thriller, horror or a bit of both.

I'm betting Fox watches these forums so be careful, if he has proof and shows that, it could go against him, lol  :D

It's happening. I can't scan the invitation because my name is plastered in large, black letters.  So that ain't happenin'.

However, I'll make sure to be a cautious film-goer who criticizes the film in the best way that I can. The runtime isn't listed, either, so I can't comment on that either.

Yeah you don't want to blow your cover lol, when you go in keep playing the mission impossible theme tune in your head, i think the run time that's been circulating is around the 3 hour mark, but you can bet your bottom dollar the final theatrical cut will probably run between 2 hrs 25 -2hours 40 at the most, Scott is well known for be very detailed and a few of his films have run near the 2hr 30min mark. Fox will make him trim it anyway, so it can appeal to a mainstream audience, and whatever gets cut will be put back in for the dvd/blu ray release no doubt.

Absolutely. I would do it were it not for the name and the numbers that the invite has at the bottom. The could easily identify me. Easily. Don't worry, this is all real. I'll make sure to report back, but I'll answer questions generally. Anything too specific will get me killed.

By that, I simply mean that I'll answer as many questions as I can and do my best, but if we're talking tiny details, I probably can't divulge those. But you'll know it's for real when I describe the theater -- etc.

Disendor...no offense, but I am starting to have a bit of difficulty with your credibility.  I had recommended you mask off your name.  Now you say there are numbers along the bottom of the ticket.  Fair enough...well mask those off as well.  In other words, mask anything that would identify the ticket with yourself.  I have to imagine that your name and the numbers occupy only a small portion of the enitire real-estate on the ticket/invitation.  So, it would helpful and appreciated, by all of us, if we could see what the ticket looks like.  Yes?

Still toying around with it. The page itself is scanned, so it's a little muddy, but it still has the numbers and my actual name. Name across the top, numbers on bottom next to a bar code (which is contained within a film ticket shape). Still trying. Not a hoax, folks. I have better things to do with my time then toy with my fellow Alien fans.

Disendor, as I recommended previously, just take some plain white paper (or whatever color) and use some scissors to cut up the paper into individual strips, which are sized so they exactly cover over your name, numbers and code...without covering over anything else.  EASY, BREEZY.   Then scan it.  You don't even have to mess around with Photoshop.

And it should be crystal clear, if you scan it at 300 dpi as a minimum (hell, scan it at even higher rez, if you need to).  There is no reason an Invitation/Ticket that was issued directly to you, should come across as "muddy" if you scan it right.

If he posts his ticket and then posts the entire plot, while other people who attended the screening post the same plot elsewhere, then it matters. I want to know whether to block him or not.

But it's not. And people seem to have misunderstood my 'ticket' comment -- it's not digital. It's not a ticket. It's a piece of paper with the name of the film (which is called 'Untitled Science Fiction Film'), the name of the screening company, and the recruiter code, the time... everything is on here. The trouble that I'm having is that I pretty much have to block out everything on this ticket. Obviously, I can take a picture and while that might work for some, it doesn't work for someone trying not to have the book thrown at him and of everything would be visible. This is top secret, look the other way stuff I'm dealing with in regards to the company producing it... FOX.

Prometheus -- Dunkle Zeichen ??  Isn't that the German equivalent to the English phrase "Dark Signs"?  No, I don't think you missed anything, and no I don't know why they would add that additional description to the German title...unless the word "Prometheus" has some different, special meaning in German that would cause confusion?  But I don't think that is the case.

in germany: Alien - The creepy creature from another world    ::)

but "dunkle zeichen" (dark signs) don't make any sense, coz the name prometheus, in german, intonate differently than in the english language and that means "pʀoːmeːthɔɪs" (phonetic) itself is the alternate title.  :-X

this is another shining example of how they tend to f**k up movie titles in germany... seems like a lot of movie distributers have the urge to add totally pointless subheaders to movies that make no sense whatsoever.

i always found it hilarious how they named the movie "Cellular" in germany - "Final Call - Wenn er auflegt, muss sie sterben" (translation: when he hangs up she has to die"). amazing, isn't it? why not include the full plot summary in the title... gee

Yup!...A magazine writer was interviewing Sigourney Weaver and they were discussing all the problems they had during the shoot. Sigourney said that at one point, one of the crew had a bunch of t-shirts made with the word "f**k!" printed on the front for everyone to wear, because it was one of the most commonly heard words uttered amongst the cast and crew during the entire shoot, both on and off set.

In a fictional, made up, lying kind of a way; yes.  Yes we do!

We could kidnap those of the Gearbox crew that got to see it and torture them into telling us how they thought the movie was, without spoiling anything.

I wonder if test screenings of Prometheus will either lack the ending or have a false one. Hopefully these rumored test screenings yield us some juicy plot details soon--this dry spell is agonizing.

If he is a troll it is such a weird and random trolling attempt after reading the rest of his twitter.  Like it's even an odd movie to pick as a "cry for attention" kinda tweet.  You figure he would have used, judging by his twitter, like #avengers or something, not a kinda "cult" film....[I still consider Alien to be one of the most successful cult films of all time].

Alien is far from what I would describe as a cult film. Cult film's are usually pictures that have developed a reputation on smaller or home release, slowly rising to mainstream levels of attention over years. Alien was an out and out success and has been since it's release.

So this screening was apparently supposed to happen today. Maybe it's happening right now, and when we wake up tomorrow there will be spoilers posted either here or IMDB!!!!

Or not.

Don't you Aussie's live in the future? Or is it the past? I dunno. There was no time confirmed on the website, just "12:03am" or somesuch before they took it down. It's still the 29th PST, so...

We live in the future! Depending on where you are on this massive island of course. Me and Pn are 10 hours ahead to be precise, if you are in London, or 18 hours ahead of PST.

Quite.  Cult films are ones that generally don't do well at the box office but ultimately find a dedicated audience on video/ DVD or via small independent cinemas.

Alien always had a big audience.

I don't think that was the actual time--no studio is going to hold a test screening after midnight. They probably didn't even go through with it anyway.  :-\

So, if this is true, will we have to wait until the review to hear if it was any good? Or can you give your (obviously spoiler-free) opinion now?

Why even post that you've seen it of you're not willing to talk about it here? We don't need a precursor. You'll just anger people by teasing them. Stop.

Lol, ok good luck with that lol....

Well if anything what he will be telling them, or if I am not mistaking still has to write them a letter, will have to be spoiler free. As the movie is for sure not off of the embargo list yet and Harry and AICN will certainly not post anything that has any spoilers in it that will cost them possible legal actions against them. So he basically could write whatever he wanted saying he saw anything and it could have possibly just been My Little Pony, and say it was awful or great just from the trailers he has seen.

I sure hope the guys over at AICN are not to foolish and fall for this nonsense. That would be totally jacked up if he did somehow convince one of them that he was legit and got his supposed review out there lol.... Anthony
