I blame the internet  :D

Many times fans (not just fans even, anyone, anyone at all) post their opinions so quickly and so easily that the opinions themselves take on a life of their own. Each point of view develops a concentrated faction of adherents before people take the time to consider what's being said. Instead, we start scanning social media posts for ready-made opinions we can import as our own. (Not that anyone here is guilty of that, and certainly not me ;)   )

Exactly. Even if people realize this, they more often than not simply cannot see the flaw in themselves. They may think others blind sheep for following popular narratives on social media, but they will think that their own change of opinion on e.g. the new Star Wars movie was entirely their own.

I thought it was alright until Leia started floating in space.

Not all fans liked Alien Isolation.  Some hated the fact there was only one alien for the majority of the game and you couldn't kill the alien.

I'll leave this quote by Paul Anderson:

"If you work with a subject matter beloved by a hardcore fanbase, then there's going to be a huge amount of discussion of what you've got wrong or right.  In some ways you can never please overly obsessive fans, it's just impossible."

Difficult, but by no means impossible...

Truem, but not all people loved it. I liked it a lot but i could nitpick a few holes in it if i wanted. But for a videogame, coming after A:CM it's a godsend  :-*   I wish there would be a update of it in the future where some of the things that annoy me are ironed out, simple thing really. Currently debating whether i should buy it for PC as well, have the PS3 and PS4 version.

I see we are having the same discussion simultaneously in two threads. That quote is on point, though there are major issues that go beyond from hardcore fans personal vision how the franchise should be.

It revived it because a lot of people liked it.

And a lot of thought it was just ok, pretty sure a substantial amount were disappointed and felt like it was a missed opportunity or simply didn't like it. It was still in the limelight mainly because it was a prequel to Alien and because Ridley himself was involved.

Nonsense, nobody watched or cared for AvP:R, it's completely irrelevant.

AVPR was just the nail in the coffin.  The series ended 25 years ago.  A:R, while I like the film, turned it into a comedy.  Then along came AVP which  made it juvenile.

Prometheus did revive the franchise, say what you will about it.

Because Prometheus was the first movie in the actual series in 15 years, and being a prequel how could have it not revived it.

Money doesn't equal a good film. Watching and buying it isn't the same as liking it, many folks went to see it and hated it, those who didn't see it bought it on dvd and then hated it. Even those who knew how bad the film was such as franchise fans bought it for the sake of completing their collection. Doesn't mean they cared for it. That is the difference between box office numbers vs critic reception, the latter can at least tell you about the quality of the film, while numbers only tell you how many people bought/went to see it. Of course audience opinions can vary.

AVP:R made over three times it's budget, and another $40 million on home media. Plenty of people cared for it.

As far as the xeno goes in the Covenant sequel, I don't mind if they include it or not.

Still not that huge of a number, none of my friends, some are real Alien fans, have never completely seen it. The film is pretty much forgotten. Did anybody  really take AvP films as a serious representation of Alien or part of the franchise. If they did then they don't deserve any better. I agree it tarnished the Alien name a bit, but it's still largely irrelevant imo.
