1. "The Martian" made more money in theaters than all of Blomkamp's 3 movies combined.

Yet District 9 was still more successful than The Martian. District 9 made x7 times it's budget back, The Martian x5.8.

QuoteBlomkamp hasn't even made a sequel/prequel for his successful "District 9". This shows Blomkamp's limited creativity.

So because he's more interested in coming-up with brand new creative ideas and films instead of rehashing previous stuff he now has "limited creativity"?  ???

QuoteAnd now Blomkamp is releasing short films? That is not a good sign for his career.

Why not? Many noted directors do short-films in-between bigger projects. And he's not just making short films, he founded his own production and visual effects studio with the aim of re-defining the way film financing and distribution works. He's doing pioneering work and he's doing what he loves most without any corporate interference.

QuoteThere is no solid financial reason for Fox to pick Blomkamp for an Alien movie.

And yet they had no problem giving him another Sci-fi/Cyberpunk movie to write and direct.

We worship at the altar of The Eight Passenger.

I think a key factor is Blomkamp is still clearly interested in the actual alien and believes there are places it can still go.

I don't see that. Blomkamp is just taking ideas from James Cameron's proposed sequel to "Aliens". Nothing new.
And at the same time Blomkamp bringing back Ripley, Hicks and Newt kicks out two movies from the Alien franchise timeline.
Alien 3 & 4 took the xenomorph places it could go. Blomkamp would get rid of that in his proposed movie.

Scott on the other hand, does not.

That's not what I saw in "Prometheus" and "Covenant" where there was plenty of new information about xenomorph origins and possibilities of how they can be created / used.

I guess I'll have to just agree to disagree.  :-)

I think Blomkamp could have made a better Alien film.

If a person loves Blomkamp's work, that's their privilege. But when someone thinks a possible film could be "better", that is just the hopeful personal taste of one viewer.
- In looking at broad averages of a possible movie's popularity, I can't predict a Rotten Tomatoes score or IMDb rating for a film which does not exist.

In terms of who is the more popular science fiction movie director (based on box office), clearly that is Ridley Scott.
1. "The Martian" made more money in theaters than all of Blomkamp's 3 movies combined.
2. "Prometheus" had higher box office than any of Blomkamp's films.
3. Blomkamp has never created a movie franchise or made a sequel/prequel. Ridley's "Alien" started a franchise and Ridley made a prequel and sequel.
- Blomkamp hasn't even made a sequel/prequel for his successful "District 9". This shows Blomkamp's limited creativity.
4. Blomkamp's biggest box office film, "Elysium" has about the same ratio of box office to budget performance as what "Covenant" will end up with after its Japan release (box office divided by production budget).
- And now Blomkamp is releasing short films? That is not a good sign for his career.
- There is no solid financial reason for Fox to pick Blomkamp for an Alien movie.
- There is no evidence that he has the talent to keep a franchise going in terms of box office which can lead to more sequels.

Pretty original and well done for what it is.

Actually, these 20 mins felt more interesting and coherent than the mess that was Alien: Covenant. Let's hope smth bigger comes out of these exp. films for Blomkamp.

I saw this a few days ago, I'm looking forward to watching them. Especially the Vietnam one.

I will say this will probably make most of us wish we got his movie over Riddley's

I disagree.

Sir Ridley is a far Better Director than Blomkamp.

To each their own. He has made good movies (Alien, BHD, Gladiator) but I think Blomkamp could have made a better Alien film.

Ok so trailer for his new independant studio.
Check out 0:34. There is clearly a de-aged 1986 era Michael Biehn. Do you guys think he's trying to get the ball rolling on Alien again?

I think he's trying to say........this is what you could have had.

I'm looking forward to seeing these short stories of his, world building has always been his strong point, all he needs is a good writer and he'd be top tier.
