They would have had a contract to deliver a game by X date for X amount, there may have been incentive bonuses, e.g. you get X more if it is metacritic 8.0+ or you deliver on time.

I'd say a lot of the problem with this game probably started with that contract, SEGA must have really left a lot of loopholes. For example I'd stick in a clause stating that no part of the game development should be outsourced. It's just a line, easy to do, but think of the difference that could have made to the final product.

At the end of the day SEGA got the bare minimum of what they paid for in the most cost effective way for Gearbox. I'm sure SEGA learned some lessons on contract writing after that.

Hypothetically speaking, who would have the power to make them work on the game? Not that they would now of course, that time has passed... But who would have had the power in 2013 to force Sega and GBX's hand and make them fix the mess if they had the money to spend. Fox?

This is a good question.

Is there any precedent?

Where a license holder has licensed out an IP to another studio to create a project but the project ended up bringing shame to that IP's franchise and the license holder demanded the studio correct it?

I feel like in this medium the only franchises big enough for this to have happened with are Star Wars, Call of Duty, Marvel titles and a bit further down the line AvP.

Remember back when Infinity Ward and Activision had their little debacle... I believe regarding Modern Warfare 3, plenty of IW employees were let go and Sledgehammer was brought in to help finish MW3.

BUT IW is an inhouse developer of Activision so its not quite the same as anything with A:CM.

When Mad Max: Fury Road was "completed" Roadshow & Warner Bros (whom I assume are the licenseholders) decided to bring EVERYONE back for reshoots (outside of the usual planned reshoots) including the Director (who started the Franchise). That is sorta similar.

I'd rather Fox and Sega spend their budget on an entirely fresh 'ALIENS' title.

This game is History - and to everyone's benefit, it would be better off if it stayed that way.

Its possible with the reputation of this game they could cash in on making a proper remaster.

GBX don't have to atone for the mess that is 'A:CM' and it's never going to happen.  On the other hand, I don't have to purchase any more of their titles and I haven't done so since that game was released.  I'm happy to vote with my wallet in this case.

I don't care if it makes no difference to them.  It makes a difference to me.

I never understood the whole we don't fix anything unless SEGA pays attitude. I mean I get that you want money for your services...but this is an iconic franchise. Just fix the damn thing. Even if it's only on PC. GBX could have redeemed itself through the steam platform, easy.... but my guess is they simply refused or were held back by Sega.

Wouldn't surprise me if some of the devs sneaked out the source and fixed it for themselves lol.

They could start by saying sorry... and maybe explaining why it turned out like it did.

Except that would get them into major shit with Sega as I think we all know they essentially outsourced this piece of crap and poured all their resources (and likely Sega's money) into making their own IP (Borderlands 2).

Or Permanently release it for free with all of the DLC. Would Sega do this? Probably not. Least the PC version is decent if you have some of the DLC and Bughunt. The Campaign sucks ass, but least with that Fan mod for it, it turns it into a somewhat more enjoyable experience.

Fixing the graphics would not be enough.

They have to revise the story. Add to it and take the squad beyond LV-426 as it should have been in the first place. Fix the AI. Improve the voice acting. Improve animations. Improve overall gameplay. Remove shitty Xeno designs like the Boiler and replace the Crusher with a Praetorian.

Then lastly it would need to be free or damn well near free. (5-10 bucks)

THAT would make up for what they did.

Ideally, but there might be a major overhaul of the lighting setup in the game.
The  trickiest aspect of the lighting is the depth of fog. The fog in the game messes with the occulsion since it varies between stages and there is a really tight lighting/ shadow setup.
There could be many factors in the demo that probably made  it possible to look the way it did and it was probably done using several passes and hense, the game was never a live game...

it could be possible, unHEARD OF, but possible.

Nah, I don't play.  I'm sure you'll find some other takers around here though.

Backwards compatibility doesn't necessarily preclude a remaster.  Nordic Games made the Darksiders games backwards compatible for Xbox 360 and then got the developers to remaster them for the Xbox One and the PS4.

Gearbox could do the same and squeeze some more money out of A:CM in the process.

Yeah, you play on xbox?  My version never had any of the ai issues everyone else reported.  Maybe sometime you woild like to help me fight ninja troll lurkers?
