Several members from different universities in the UK have launched an international study today about people’s memories of Ridley Scott’s Alien. What is it that different people most remember and value about this film? Answering this lingering question is the main objective behind the “Remembering Alien” project.
“We are asking people to go to www.remembering-alien.org to take part in a brief questionnaire, designed to let people share with us their recollections of a fantastic piece of film history. We’re interested in hearing from anyone who has ever seen the film – whether or not they enjoyed it – including those who would have seen the film during its release into theatres” Said Thomas Phillips representative of the study.
Those still following Dennis Lowe’s Alien documentaries should be pleased to know that his latest one, Alien Makers V, has been released. This includes contributions from David Watkins, Joyce Voysey, Robert Voysey, Dick Budden and Pat Lowry.
You can download it directly here (331MB). Thanks to Eric for the news.
Today, thousands of websites (the largest being Wikipedia) were blacked out in protest of the controversial SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (PROTECT IP Act) bills going through congress in the United States. Their aim is to stop copyright infringement but instead, they will destroy the very freedom of the internet. This doesn’t just affect people in the United States but everybody in the world. Fansites like this one simply wouldn’t be able to exist if these bills were passed. You can read more about the situation on the Stop American Censorship website and by watching the video below:
The major players supporting the bills obviously include the MPAA and the RIAA. The opponents include Facebook, Twitter, Google, eBay, Yahoo and many other high profile companies.
A new interview with Sigourney Weaver has been posted up on ShockTillYouDrop:
“You know, I work with a lot of young actors at our theater in New York, The Flea, and it’s good for them to see these embarrassing screen tests. I guess I can sort of see what Ridley maybe liked in it. It’s hard to let it go because, obviously, the film is a much more finished performance. But it’s good for people to see that we actually got better in the movie.”
She talks about the Prequel, the series in general, Avatar and they discuss the Anthology set briefly. Click for the whole thing. Thanks to AlienFan2006.
Unfortunately I must inform you all that screenwriter, Dan O’Bannon, the man behind the original draft of Alien has passed away at age 63. Harry from Aint It Cool News was the one to reveal the sad news.
“Well, David called to tell me Dan O’Bannon had just passed away. Dan had been in the hospital this past week fighting to hang on, but lost the battle not too long ago – and David wanted to alert the world of the passing of one of Geek’s great creators.”
On behalf of the staff and community of AvPGalaxy, we can only wish Dan O’Bannon’s friends and family the best of luck. I’d thank to thank Coming Soon, Chris Archer, Steve and the many others for taking the time to send us an email.
I’ve just been informed of a new short animation film called E.T.A. that was released last year. It was directed by Henrik B. Clausen and is presented at Junkworks.org. It’s a four-minute Alien parody with an amusing twist at the end. This short film has been in the works since 2004 and it premiered at BreakPoint ’08 in Bingen, Germany where it won first prize in the animation competition.
I think you’ll all agree. The animation is absolutely outstanding. You can find a HD download on the Junkworks website. Thanks to sak1na for the news.
You may have heard about a new 80-minute Alien documentary that has been put together by special effects technician Dennis Lowe. It has interviews with lots of the behind-the-scenes crew and they talk about their experiences on the film and so forth. Various crew members have been chatting to fans about their experiences over on Alien Experience.
They were supposed to be releasing the DVD ISO files for direct download but that won’t be happening now due to technical reasons apparently. So as a compromise, Dennis Lowe has volunteered to make people their own copy of the Alien Makers documentary on DVD and send it to you free of charge. All you need to do is email Alien Experience at firstname.lastname@example.org with your full name, complete mailing address, and the DVD format you require (PAL or NTSC). Thanks to SiL for the news.
Update: Requests for a physical DVD are over now. The NTSC ISO is available on Mininova as a torrent, however. Someone will probably make it available on a faster server eventually. You can also download Jon Sorensen’s Alien 5 soundtrack here which was used in the documentary.
Today marks the 30th Anniversary of ALIEN when it was first released in cinemas May 25, 1979. Directed by Ridley Scott, ALIEN went on to receive critical acclaim worldwide and is still considered by many to be one of the best sci-fi / horror films ever made. From the remarkable set and creature designs created by H.R. Giger to the frightening atmosphere created, the film is a masterpiece.
Be sure to take some time out today and watch ALIEN one more time.
I just received an e-mail informing me of an Aliens and Predator attraction in Queensland, in the land down under. From what I understand, it’s a laser-tag style game:
“Your Mission: Join the Battle at Dreamworld and help wipe these creatures out… but first you need to learn everything you can about these deadly adversaries. Here’s your first tip… if it moves, shoot it!”
Not overly sure how it works, but like I said, I think it’s a laser tag style event. If you’re interested you can check out the AvPvY website. If anyone happens to pop down, be sure to let us know what it’s like. Thanks to Liam for the e-mail.
