It’s a tradition on Alien vs. Predator Galaxy to do a breakdown of the trailers after they’ve been released. We’ve been doing this since the first Alien vs. Predator trailers back in 2004 and we’re back again with one for the first trailer of Alien: Covenant.
We’re going to break down the trailer with what we’ve heard of the film already and I will also provide some additional context that may not be known yet. Alien vs. Predator Galaxy can also reveal that aside from a few brief shots, the footage in the trailer is largely from the first hour of the film. I think it should go without saying but just in case beware spoilers!
The trailer opens with what will likely be one of the more memorable sequences from Alien: Covenant – the birth of the Neomorph and the backburster. We see Amy Seimetz’s character running down a corridor towards the sound of pounding on a door. We find Carmen Ejogo’s character, the ship doctor, locked inside the medbay with Benjamin Rigby’s character.
Ejogo’s character pleads with Seimetz’s to be let out but she refuses and runs off when Rigby’s character’s back begins to split open. We also get a quick shot of Ejogo on the floor, holding a knife towards something approaching from off-screen: the newborn backbuster?
David is Brought Online
Next we’re treated to several shots of what is likely to be the start of Alien: Covenant as we described when we announced Guy Pearce’s appearance in the film. We see a figure, Weyland, approaching David who is sat in a room overlooking a mountain with the piano from one of the recent production stills. These are David’s first hours of consciousness.
The Covenant Arrives at Paradise
We see the Covenant, a long and narrow vessel, cruise by what I presume to be Paradise, the planet where Alien: Covenant takes place. We see storms on the surface and a very cloudy looking planet.
Walter and Daniels
Next up we have a short clip of Michael Fassbender as Walter shining a torch around what I believe is the terraforming bay we saw in some of the leaked photos. His torch light appears to move over Daniels.
Express Elevator to Paradise, Going Down
Here we have several shots in which the various crewmembers are getting ready at their consoles. Danny McBride’s Tennesse puts on his hat with Callie Hernandez’s character sat next to him. We also get a quick shot of Jussie Smollet before we move to the dropship making its way through Paradise’s stormy atmosphere.
It eventually emerges and we see some exterior shots from Milford Sound as the dropshop flies over the landscape and lands, depositing it’s crew onto the surface. We see Fassbender as Walter, Billy Crudup and Demian Bichir.
We get a quick shot of Benjamin Rigby’s character stepping on one of the pods we first revealed in our article on the Neomorphs. As described in our article, these pods and spores are the result of the local ecosystem being mutated by the accelerant/black goo. We get a shot of some of the disturbed spores entering Rigby’s ear.
“Are You Sure about this, Captain?”
A quick clip of Katherine Waterston as Daniels talking to Billy Crudup (acting captain of the Covenant. We’ve already mentioned who was captain of the Covenant in our James Franco exclusive). She asks “are you sure about this, captain?” and he replies “how do you mean?” An additional comment from this scene is cut into the next section. Daniels says ” we don’t know what the fuck is out there!”
Next we see the landing crew of the Covenant climbing some of Paradise’s landscape, coming upon a crashed Juggernaut (David and Shaw’s from the end of Prometheus). Based on the destroyed trees, the Juggernaut has had a bit of a rough landing.
Some of the crew crawl through what appears to be an overgrown access port and we see them exploring the Orrey/Pilot’s chamber before a shot of Daniels looking at some dog-tags, presumably belong to Shaw.
Next we see Billy Crudup’s character in a cavern in front of an egg with Michael Fassbender in the background, watching. He’s portraying David during this sequence. We’ve seen this set previously in the So Is It Any Good leaked pictures.
Crudup is leaning over the egg which opens and the facehugger jumps out onto Crudup. The egg looks somewhat different from all the other previous films. Perhaps this isn’t quite the traditional Alien we’d been expecting?
The Dropship is Destroyed
And, of course, the obligatory shot of a ship exploding! Here we see the Covenant’s dropship go up in flames. There’s also a shot of a cloaked figure, who turns out to be David, approaching the camera. He is wearing a cloak that looks like the cloaks we saw the Engineers wearing at the beginning of Prometheus.
Our one glimpse at Alien: Covenant’s new variation of the Alien is as brief as brief could be. We see Amy Seimetz’s character shooting at it, causing a massive explosion that moves us into a shot of the dropship in flames with a burning figure stumbling out of the entrance. The Neomorph is newly born, looking similar to the unused concepts of the Proto-Aliens from Prometheus.
Tennessee and Daniels
We get several shots of Tennessee and Daniels moving through the ship, arming up and several interior shots of the Covenant including another look at the terraforming bay. Danny McBride isn’t looking particularly good in these shots. We also see a woman, not sure who, screaming. There’s also a quick shot of a hallway with a body on the ground in the distance.
This is the shower sequence we’d heard about back at the start of December. We see Jussie Smollet and Callie Hernandez’s character in the shower, having sex. Somewhat mirroring of Lambert’s (or Brett in the earlier cuts) death in Alien, an Alien tail sneaks between the pairs legs. We see a quick glimpse of the Alien emerging from the darkness (looking very much like the poster) before we get a quick shot of Hernandez being covered in blood.
The trailer then fades to the title card with Covenant appearing gradually, similar to the original Alien title sequence, a callback to the original Prometheus and Alien: Isolation
