Updated: The Predator Will Be R-Rated!

The Predator will be R-Rated! More details continue to crop up regarding The Predator as Shane Black continues making the press rounds for The Nice Guys. Earlier this morning we posted about Shane Black talking about costume design for The Predator. Den of Geek now brings us reassurance that The Predator will be R-rated!

“I made a condition of my participation with Predator that it be the same rating as the first movie, and the first movie was Rated R. In other words, I don’t want to cut away every time the Predator does something violent. I was watching the American version of The Grudge, which was PG-13, and I remember being so frustrated by the fact that everything that was scary in the Japanese version, they had to cut away from in the PG-13 American version.”

The Predator will be R-rated! According to Shane Black the R-rating was a condition of his involvement with The Predator! The Predator Will Be R-Rated!

The Predator will be R-rated! According to Shane Black the R-rating was a condition of his involvement with The Predator!

Considering the talk of The Predator being a big event film, something akin to a Marvel release, it was a legitimate concern that The Predator would see a tamer rating to allow the younger audience in (something Fox attempted with Paul Anderson’s Alien vs. Predator but criticism of that PG13 rating led to overcompensation with the sequel Alien vs. Predator: Requiem) however it would appear that Shane Black is sticking to his guns and getting what he wants from 20th Century Fox. And it sounds like he knows exactly what he wants!

Elaborating on it further, Black explained that: “there’s also a sensibility and a sense of brooding menace and we can have fun but there’s an element of horror that’s unmistakable in The Predator,” he continued. “I don’t want to have to compromise it by just treating it like a popcorn film. That said, I hope there’s some popcorn viewing available in it, too. It’s an R-rated popcorn movie, which is the best kind to me.”

Update #1 (13/05/16) – ScreenRant has just posted their own interview with Shane Black where the topic of the R-rating and budget came up. Black commented on the success of Fox and Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool was instrumental in the decisions made by Fox: “Before Deadpool everyone was saying exactly the opposite. It’s only been recently that this sort of thing has become more palatable to the decision makers.”

Black also discusses more about the approach his is taking The Predator, again emphasizing the desire for The Predator to be an event film and to be something that reinvigorates interest in the series: “That’s what the goal is here, to take the Predator from a sort of knock-off version that gets a certain amount of money every few years to one that’s more eventized, that you would get your tickets for it months in advance, actually know it’s coming, and say, ‘Yeah, let’s line up and see that.’

Nothing but I want something thats Badass lol I see a lot of guys on here that have cool names like The Eighth Passenger ( Referring to Alien 1 ) also Cityhunter Predator from Predator 2.

I 1st found this site in 2007 when Avpr was in development and always came back to it because I loved it. From here I found out about Predatorstuff.com and from there I found out about Sideshow Collectibles in California. I have started collecting in 2008 and since then I have accuired a lot of desired pieces. I have The Berserker Predator 1:1 bust and The Predalien 1:1 bust from Sideshow Collectibles to name some. Love them so much. But that's my little history with Avpgalaxy.net.

When I first came on this site I seen a pic, a still, posted on this site of Avpr of Wolf Predator holding a Alien in the sewer and I was like " Wow! there making another movie!?" I have followed the site ever since.

But Predators were R rated without anyone pushing anything. Deadpool is getting too much credit, like it invented R rating.

It's not that though. I think it's that Deadpool proved you can make good R rated films that earn money in the current climate.

I know I should create a account here. I'm thinking of a cool name now. I'll try to create one tonight or tomorrow.

Glad to hear it, Mike! Look forward to seeing what you come up with.  :)

I love Predators. I thought it was a nonstop suspenseful horror movie. The makers wanted to make it a horror movie and it's awesome. Always loved Predators, always will. I'm game for any Predator movie for life.

Why don't you register an account here? You post often enough I recognize the name, but it's always "guest"

I know what you mean. For some reason, Predators lack any sense of being watched and hunted. In the original, you sense the dread, it's eerie and you feel like something's there watching them. It's a huge jungle but it feels claustrophobic. Predators didn't achieve that feeling.

  6. PRJ_since1990
When I saw Predators in theater for the first time, I was on the edge of my seat. I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. But after watching it several times since then, I realize it was more of a let down. I never got the same feeling outside the first viewing. Predator and Predator 2, however, still give me good vibes when I watch them. There's something special about those films (more so the original, but I love both) and I sincerely hope Shane Black can capture that same feel that makes you want to revisit the movie time and time again. Just my 2 cents.

I don't think anyone is claiming that the rating means it will be a sure thing. I just think it's something that people do continue to care about after the debacle that was Alien vs. Predator and that it shows that one of the mature aspects of the series isn't being compromised.

It sounds like Shane doesn't want to be held back by a PG-13 rating, rather then pursuing a R rating, which seems to be a mistake a lot of filmmakers have done in the past
  9. bobcunk
I can't remember if promethious was rated are, but wast avp the only one that wasn't? The movie has to be good to begin with, if aliens was the same but ilimenated the swearing and stuff that got an r rating it would still have been just as good. Same goes for things like terminator 2,it wasn't the r rating that made it good but I do thing it's stupid if the make things like Friday the 13 or saw a pg rating since though are only about the blood and gore.
  10. Whiskeybrewer
A treatment is just a blow by blow story of what is going to happen and that is fleshed out in a proper script. Unless your Cameron of course and you write a scriptment which is a combo of the two
  11. Mike
Black supposly wrote the treatment script and Dekker is writing the actual script but how does that work. Wouldn't the treatment be considered the actual script?

Btw, That's a sick picture of Predator 2 posted! He looks badass! Always loved the film, always will. :D :D

Can someone tell me how a movie that has not even been filmed yet get a definitive R-rating? Contract negotiations? What if the script doesn't call for it? We are going to end up with CGI blood and a girl getting cut in half with a shuriken that defies physics, like some previous Predator installments. Frankly, I am tired of Hollywood hacks thinking that just because an Alien or a Predator movie has an R-rating, that is going to make everything all right. I am still trying to figure out why Prometheus had an R-rating.

Shane Black made the rewrites after Dekker , and he will direct too, he knows it's R.
I guess he asked to get carte blanche, and a big budget and they accepted.
I think Black knows the R rating is not enough , but he's a great writer so you won't get another avp OR predatorS.

I think it's just a shallow boost of confidence in R-rated films being able to make returns. Then again, if they're aiming for an event film akin to a Marvel release, maybe they are wanting to make it something big like Deadpool.

LOL! Oh come on. This has to be marketing to push Deadpool dvd sales or something, right?

Are they expecting The Predator to make DP numbers? Cause that would be crazy. I know that Predators is a long running franchise but the movies are seen and lower grade sci-fi monster flicks. And they all basically made their money back but they are not going to get 3/4 of a billion in ticket sales.

I know Hollywood doesnt like to spend more money than needed but what would a pg-13 Predator film do but hurt the franchise and lowering it's money potential further.

DP is really the reason you are dropping 60 mil on a basic guaranteed return if the film is at least average.

haha you're right man. If they're expecting DP numbers or a turn out, I think they're going to be disappointed. Yea there is a lot of fans for the franchise but you're right, essentially they're just seen as sci-fi monster flicks. Let's be honest, the Alien & Predator franchise is not Marvel or Star Wars. I don't think it'll ever get that massive. Hell there was barely anyone in the theater when I saw AVP & I saw it opening day. I remember 5 people being in AVP:R haha I didn't hit Predators in theater so I don't know how the turn out was for that but yea if they're expecting Predator to  reach Marvel or Star Wars status, I just don't think it'll happen. Hopefully I'm proved wrong but I doubt it based on previous theater experiences. The only one that had a good turn out that I was at was for Resurrection but I got to see an advanced screening of it before it was officially released in theater.

It does irritate me that everyone is acting like Deadpool is the first one to do it. Honestly, I didn't even find Deadpool to be all that violent, I've seen stuff 10 times worse than that, I found it to be quite tame actually compared to how people were making it out to be. But then again, I was watching stuff like RoboCop & Predator when I was in the 4th grade so I'm quite used to it all. Hell, Starship Troopers was more violent than Deadpool (and more entertaining in my opinion). To me it's more like "It's about time we went back to R rated movies" but I hate that it's being treated like it's something new & Deadpool was the start of it. For as meh, as AVP was, I still think it suffered greatly from that PG-13 rated & really should have been an R. Like I said, I was already assuming The Predator was going to be R but the having to state that it is makes me weary.
  18. overthere
Why is everyone acting like Deadpool invented R rating? There were plenty of successful movies rated R in the last 10 years. Predators were R rated, so it's not something out of the ordinary for a Predator movie.

Seems a bit silly to me for them to have to state it's going to be Rated R though. Well yea, that's what I was assuming from the start. I would have been very disappointed if it was anything else but R. These aren't movies for little kids so they don't need to be made for a younger audience. Hell, I'm sure most of us saw Predator & Alien at a young age & we had no problem handling the R rating back then, no need to tone it down now I say bring it on! I'm slowly getting more excited about this but I'm still weary. My guard is still up but it's lowing a little bit at a time.

I'm not surprised that The Predator will be R-rated, so was 'Predators'.

Like it's a good sign, no doubt, I'm just not that surprised.

Also PG-13 can be scary as balls if it's done right. Horror isn't strictly predicated on gore and violence to be scary. 'The Ring' (American version) is scary as f**k, and it's PG-13. 'Jaws' has some incredibly tense moments, and 'Poltergeist' has its share of freaky shit, and those are rated PG.
True but for a movie like predator gore and violence is a must.

I think it's great to have an R-Rating as it opens the door to all possible scenarios. But i gotta be honest, if it would have been PG-13 i wouldn't really give a damn either, i've seen so many good, dark and edgy PG-13 movies lately that i had a great time with, i think you could still pull off something really great with Predator.

BUT i'm still happy they are keeping it R, of course, it's just more suitable for the character.
  24. Darkness
Not really a surprise. The days of PG13 movies are long behind us. Though if Prometheus had been PG13, I wouldn't have been overly fussed about it.

And I loved The Grudge remake. I thought it was very scary. That noise that thing makes... terrifying. I think you can get away with PG13 pretty effectively in supernatural horror movies. Predator, it wouldn't work so much, as it's not really meant to be scary.
  25. Whiskeybrewer
^^ Not what i was thinking but i like it

I just think having seen pics of him nowadays, he looks the most different to his appearence in Predator. It doesnt have to be a speaking role, i'd just love for him to appear.

How would you pull off Richard Chaves cameo when Puncho is as dead as it gets.

On second thought, we didn't see any blood coming out of his head. Mac's head got burst open, but Puncho's didn't. My guess is Puncho worked with the guerillas and the Predator, staged the whole thing.
  27. overthere
Popcorn movies are the best. Predator is the greatest example, you have a movie with a haunting atmosphere but at the same time it doesn't take itself too seriously. I don't like when movies take themselves too seriously.
